HISTORY
Where does this practice come from that seems to turn every session into a ritual of collective joy? This dance that makes us move, sweat and smile, all at the same time, in a whirlwind of pure energy.
Ecstatic Dance is not a modern invention. This practice has its roots in the mists of time, when our ancestors danced around fires under the starry sky, letting loose in free movements to express joy, sorrow, hope and all that could not be said in words.
From those ancient ceremonies to the present day, Ecstatic Dance has travelled across cultures and continents, changing form but maintaining its beating heart: the freedom of expression through movement. Whether it was shamanic rituals, pagan celebrations or sacred festivals, every culture has had its own version of ecstatic dance, a universal language that transcends the barriers of time and space.
The term ‘ecstatic dance’ was taken up in the 1970s by Gabrielle Roth, a dancer and musician who, overcoming personal challenges, created the 5Rhythms approach.
Gabrielle Roth’s influence on ecstatic dance is profound. Her vision and creativity have left a lasting legacy in the world of conscious dance, inspiring almost all modern movement practices.
